Session 1: Professional Skills: The Art of Advocacy in the Local Court

Not all advocates are created equal. This practical session looks at advocacy essentials when representing clients in criminal matters in the Local Court and how you can ensure you put your best foot forward. It covers:

  • What makes a good advocate?
  • The importance of preparation and culling
  • Preparing your evidence for maximum impact
  • Tips and tricks when conducting evidence in chief, cross-examination and re-examination
  • Closing the case and the importance of confidence
  • Putting the prosecution to the test – challenging evidence and process


Session 2: Practice Management Business Skills: Cybersecurity: Protecting your Connections

Securing IT systems and data is a huge challenge for law firms amongst others, and recent ransomware attacks have highlighted the strategic importance of having robust security mechanisms in place. In this session we will examine types of attacks and what steps can be taken to minimise the risks, including:

  • Unpacking the scams – what are they?
  • ransomware
  • fraudulent emails concerning fund redirection: Deligiannidou v Sundarjee [2020] NSWSC 437
  • phishing emails leading to the release of sensitive and confidential information
  • hacking and manipulation of databases

  • Essential steps for securing your network, including managing external access
  • The potential impact of BYO devices on your network and how to manage them
  • Cybersecurity and IT policies and controls as risk minimisation tools – what you need to have in place


Session 3: Legal Ethics: Domestic Violence, Ethical Duties and Criminal Law: Raising the Bar

This session looks at the ethical challenges in advising on domestic violence charges including:

  • Contact with the complainant
  • Duties to the client
  • Duties to the court
  • Conflict of interest
  • Taking retraction statements
  • Advising complainants
